Q: How do you hope this affects
animal abuse cases in the future?
NI: At present, there’s little doubt
that many cases of abuse go unreported, and sometimes that happens because there’s no objective
way for veterinarians to support
their suspicions. This model gives
us a hard number that we can use
to back up our concerns. That
said, the model isn’t meant to give
a definitive diagnosis; there’s no
DNA test you can do for animal
abuse. It’s one of many tools available to veterinary practitioners,
and hopefully we’ll have even
Q: Is there anything cat lovers
can do to help?
NI: Honestly, animal lovers of all
kinds should keep doing what they
do so well already — caring for
and advocating for animals. We
should all be on the lookout for
signs of animal abuse. If you do
find that you suspect abuse of a
particular animal or group of animals, make note of the objective
reasons you hold that suspicion,
and call the authorities. I always
take the opportunity to also
mention that we can financially
support the countless shelters and
organizations that help victims of
abuse; it’s not just finding cases of
abuse that matters. Once a case
of abuse is identified, the most
important thing to an animal is
that it’s taken care of as well as
possible from then on. An animal
with a history of abuse can still
be a wonderful, loving pet, so
encourage friends and family who
are looking for a new pet to adopt
from a rescue organization or animal shelter.
