was filled with cages of animals.
I just sat down in the middle and
observed them. This one little guy
made eye contact, and something
about the way he watched me told
me he had more going on behind
his eyes. (Jammy jumps onto Kurt’s
lap and stretches, encouraging Kurt
to rub his ears.) At the time, he’d
just had surgery on his back legs
and wasn’t walking well. I think they
discounted his fee because they
were afraid I wouldn’t take him!
Me: Tell us how Jammy helps
you prepare for roles. Have you
ever read through your lines with
Kurt: When I’m in an audition
and a role requires me to connect
with someone, I think of my little
buddy. Just the thought of him
makes me smile, and it helps me
achieve a “boyish” quality that
translates well to camera. But if I’m
home running lines, he’s more of
a hindrance. I’m currently reading
for a part that is very serious and
has a lot of difficult terminology.
Jammy meows and claws at me,
and just does his best to distract
me. (Jammy jumps from Kurt’s lap
onto the couch and begins clawing
at the furniture.) Hey, stop that!
Me: We saw that you built
a tower for him. How has that
worked out for helping to keep him
off the table?
Kurt: He’s doing great at staying
off the table, but now he’s jumping
up on the counters! I learned that
he really just goes up there for
attention. If I actively ignore him,
he’ll jump down.
Me: He’s a fan of negative attention, huh? Tell us, if Jammy were
going to be a character on Sons of
Anarchy, who would he be?
Kurt: He’d be the scrappy stray
cat that adopted the club as his
own — not one the MC (
motorcycle club) adopted and brought
in, but one that adopted the MC.
(Jammy rubs up against his hand, as
if agreeing with him.)
Me: Tell me about a few of
Jammy’s favorite things.
Kurt: Well, we have a game we
play with the laundry basket, and
that’s one of his favorite things. We
play hide-and-seek all the time.
I’ll run from him and hide, and he
searches the room for me. You’ll
see that on the video at the end
when I run away from him — it’s
funny. We also have a whip thing
that he loves to play with; he
chases a lure, and does flips and
twists. Oh, he’s an avid fly catcher!
But he doesn’t just catch them, he
eats them. It’s weird, but it makes
Me: So, Jammy is a hunter ...
Kurt: But, he’s a respectful hunter — he only kills what he can eat.
I almost named him Hunter, but
my last name means “hunter” in
German, so I thought it would be
a bit silly for him to have the same
first and last name. (Jammy eyes the
large tower Kurt built for him, then
jumps from the couch and runs to
the top of the structure.)
Me: He seems to love climbing!
Kurt: He likes to perch up there
and watch everything. One day, I
want to build a big tower for him.
And I have other ideas, too.
Me: Like what?
Kurt: Well, I always thought
that there was a lot of dead
space under and inside the couch.
I’ve been thinking of designing a
couch with long, tubular passways
to let cats pass through or just
hide. You know, use the space
