Catster HQ: CatConLA
Susan Michals created magic when she blended cat cul- ture, today’s modern cat
lovers, and chic products into
an event — you have to experience to believe — called CatCon.
Susan and her wonderful event
team successfully put on the second
CatCon, which is held in Los Angeles,
this past June. We caught up with her at
the show to see how things were going.
CATSTER: What changes were made for this year’s CatCon?
SM: We increased by 30,000 square feet. Last year, we had about
100 vendors, this year we have about 60 more. I wanted to do
a lot more activations, because it’s groundbreaking products
and ideas for cats and their people. … Animal Planet brought the
Escape Room, Kat Von D brought the cat eye makeup in. Rachael
Ray Nutrish very successfully did the cat caricature last year and
upped it, added in a second person. … We had a sponsor come
forward who said we actually have coloring T-shirts with fabric coloring pens. … So a lot more activation came with the price of admission. The adoption village is three times the size.

place bigger for sure to accommodate.
… If it’s a good convention, it’s going to
be crowded — at Comic-Con, at South
by Southwest, ... and Anime Con — I
hate to use a pun but it’s the nature
of the beast. Challenging, yes; fixable,
What about next year’s CatCon?
Those are things that happen in the
coming months. Have we thought
about going bigger and broader? For
sure. … It’s going to be the outcome of
this weekend, compared to last. What
